zhongguoguanFrom May 1 to Oct 31, 2010, World Expo will be held in Shanghai when 182 countries and 45 international organizations will be participating in this event. On January 1, the steel skeleton of the country’s showcase building for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo was completed. Known as the “Crown of the East”, the 63-m-high pavilion construction began in 2007 and was expected to finish by September this year.

Hong Hao, Bureau of Shanghai World Expo coordination director-general, held a ceremony for this milestone and told that workers overcame incredible challenges in 2008 to achieve the completion in this period. Also as the Shanghai municipal government’s director-general, Hong called for persistence in building the China Pavilion and other Shanghai Expo structures.

The 1.5 billion-yuan ($220 million) China Pavilion contains a national hall, a 30,000-sq-m exhibition hall and a 3,000-sq-m room to be shared by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The main structure will be used for an exhibition entitled Chinese Wisdom in Urban Development, which represent the values of harmony, nature and spirit. All provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and other governments will take this opportunity to share their achievements in urbanization.

The design featuring a square roof fashioned from dougong which is a type of bracket used more than 2,000 years will make the China Pavilion be among the five permanent “green buildings” on Expo site. Other buildings will be dismantled after the event. Such design will shade the building from the sun, with a temperature buffer zone in its exterior and ecologically friendly landscaping featuring the rooftop.

In addition, the China Pavilion will also use eco-friendly sound systems and energy-saving technologies. These ideas were coming from the collective wisdom of China’s universities.
