Education experts and officials from China and Germany gathered in Hamburg late last month to discuss how to improve bilateral education cooperation.

The third Sino-German education forum lasted for a whole day aiming for professional education cooperation was jointly hosted by the Confucius Institute of Hamburg and Germany’s KWB Company.

According to Monika Auweter-Kurtz, chancellor of Hamburg University at the forum’s opening ceremony, Chinese students and researchers have contributed a lot to German education.

The chancellor said that there are more 200 Chinese students and scholars in Hamburg University who have been very important to the cooperation with Chinese higher-learning institutes. And the university hoped to expand academic and personnel exchanges.

Education Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Germany Jiang Feng described the Sino-German education cooperation as “multi-level and comprehensive.”

Jiang also said at opening ceremony that nearly 37,000 Chinese students are currently studying in German colleges and universities while there are more than 3,000 German students studying in China. In 1975, only about 30 Chinese students studied in Germany.

Based on the statistics, the two countries’ relationship in the field of education has been much more closed, Jiang added.

There were about 80 experts from the two countries participating in the forum and discussing how to strengthen bilateral exchanges on compulsory education, professional training and higher education.

The experts said that China’s rising domestic demand for professional education and training have brought vast opportunities to prestigious German professional education institutes.
