Although China’s exhibition industry starts late, it develops at a fast pace, particularly the hardware component. The eastern region, China’s most developed part, boast of its advantages in exhibition construction. Moreover, each region understands the importance of cooperation and mutual benefit and thus a well-connected network is taking shape.
Shanghai—ranking the first in eastern China
There are now 7 large exhibition centers in Shanghai, covering an area of 200,000 square meters. Over 100 professional companies are engaged in exhibit organization, management and other services. Shanghai owns enough advantages and potentials in exhibit construction, but compared with other international renowned cities, it lacks long-term plan and rational distribution.
Hangzhou—the largest exhibition hall on agenda
In regards to the quantity, exhibition halls in Hangzhou are enough. Actually, these halls are not able to hold large-scale international exhibitions, for their single functions, poor facilities and incomplete supporting facilities. To reverse the situation, Zhejiang government plans to build a new exhibition hall with an area of more than 100,000 square meters, which is scheduled to complete in 2010.
Nanjing—under development
There are 18 exhibition halls in Nanjing, among which Nanjing International Exhibition Centre with over 2200 standard booths is the largest. Due to its limited effective exhibit areas, inconvenient transportation and lack of hardware facilities, the exhibition center has not shown its strong advantages in exhibit market. Nanjing government has embarked on the construction of a large modern exhibition hall in the southern part of the city, which will fill a gap in high-level exhibition hall.
Shangdong—shifting to a leading role
The revenue of exhibition industry in 2006 was up to 15 billion yuan. There are 3 characteristics of the exhibitions in Shangdong. 1) Quantity. There are plenty of exhibitions each year, about one exhibition in every 6 days. 2) Quality. In 2006, there were 37 international exhibitions in Qingdao International Exhibition Center, accounting for 62% of all the exhibitions. 3) Exhibition tours. There were 7 national exhibition tours held in exhibition center, such as China Motorcycle and Parts Fair and China Fisheries & Seafood Expo.
Anhui—a connection
Nowadays, Anhui province has played an important part in connecting eastern and central China. As a central province, Anhui’s exhibition industry is lagging behind because of its geology and economic development. Therefore, Anhui is trying to make good use of its key resource—tourist resource to hold a few recreation-oriented exhibitions, advocating the casualty and pleasure of exhibitions. By taking advantage of the short distance with Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang, Anhui’s exhibition industry will boom in future.
