China’s shipbuilding industry is growing at an astonishing rate, and in 2006, completed shipbuilding contracts amounted to 14.52 million dwt (19% of the total global market share). New shipbuilding orders exceed 42.51 million dwt, accounting for 32% of the global market share; propelling China to number two position in value of shipbuilding contracts.

With the shipping industry expanding at such a fast pace and to increase the capacity of shipbuilding, the Chinese government has proposed a building programme involving the development of new docks and shipbuilding technologies around the Yangtse River,Pearl River and Bohai Bay. By 2015, China is expected to become the number one shipbuilder in the world with an annual shipbuilding capability of 30 million dwt. The rapid growth of foreign trade has accelerated the volume of sea freight in China. The development of foreign trade in China has become the engine that drives growth in the global maritime industry.

The shipbuilding industry plays a key role in the development of Guangdong province’s economy. In addition, it is also the pillar industry for Guangzhou’s heavy chemical industry. INMEX China has established itself as an important platform for the maritime industry. Ship building, ship repairs, marine services and engineering, offshore engineering, ports and port development are featured in this leading business event.
